Problem of Practice
NC Math I Intervention Initiative - Stopping Today's Learners from Becoming Tomorrow's Statistic
This project examined the dire need for more structured, purposeful and targeted intervention for our struggling NC Math I students. Statistics show that approximately 40% of the students in North Carolina will not meet the proficiency requirement for their Introductory Algebra course this year - this is not ok.
For my project, I implemented several research-based intervention strategies and incorporated some MTSS instructional strategies for struggling students in small group settings. I carefully tracked student performance data, as well as collected qualitative feedback from stakeholders such as teachers and students and made plans for next steps after the conclusion of my study.
My biggest takeaway from this project is that more needs to be done to meet the needs of our students. Intervention within the classroom setting is not enough and administrators and teachers must collaborate to find unique scheduling alternatives in order to meet the needs of our current student population.
